A new GO station and more parking spaces will make it easier for commuters in Richmond Hill and Markham to take public transit and create about 1,000 jobs.
The Richmond Hill GO transit line is being extended to a new station in Gormley. This will expand GO Train service for commuters and visitors north of the existing Richmond Hill Station. Construction is set to begin this fall with the station expected to open in late 2013.
In addition, more than 500 new parking spaces will be added at the Richmond Hill GO station. Construction is scheduled to begin in August and once complete, it will benefit more than 2,300 commuters who use this station on a daily basis.
Work is also scheduled to begin this month to add over 500 additional parking spaces at the Mount Joy GO Station, as well as a new entrance to the parking lot at Highway 48. Once complete in November, the upgrades will benefit 1,300 commuters who use this station on a daily basis.
Richmond Hill commuters are now able to use PRESTO to travel between multiple transit systems using a single card. PRESTO is expected to be ready for GO users at Mount Joy and Markham stations by the end of the month. PRESTO allows commuters to transfer seamlessly with one card across multiple transit systems in the GTHA.
Updating Ontario’s roads, highways, transit, hospitals and schools is part of the government’s plan to create jobs, grow local economies and ensure the province remains strong and competitive for years to come.
