RICHMOND HILL – York Region MPPs Michael Chan, Steven Del Duca, Dr. Helena Jaczek, Reza Moridi and Chris Ballard are pleased to announce the province is making it easier for drivers in York Region to stay safe on the roads this winter.
Insurance companies in Ontario must now offer a winter tire insurance discount for all drivers in the province. Drivers should install four winter tires for better traction, handling and breaking in snow and ice — and they can have their auto insurance rates reduced by between two and five per cent on average. Drivers should also ensure their vehicles are winter-ready by getting a vehicle maintenance check-up and assembling a winter survival kit including items like a flashlight, blanket and shovel.
The province has expanded Track My Plow to all 20 of the province’s winter maintenance contract areas, helping more people track the location of snowplows in York Region. Drivers are reminded to give them plenty of room and never pass a working snowplow.
Ontario is also piloting a new “forecasted road conditions” feature on Ontario 511 that predicts road conditions based on forecasted weather, precipitation, wind and temperature to help drivers plan their routes. Drivers can also find other traveller information, including reported road conditions, to help them stay informed.
Additionally, drivers are reminded to give themselves extra time when travelling in the winter to reach their destinations safely, and if the weather is bad, postpone their trip until conditions improve.
Making it easier to stay safe on the roads is part of Ontario’s plan to create fairness and opportunity during this period of rapid economic change. The plan includes a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care, and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25 through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation.
“Starting this winter season, drivers across Ontario will be able to save on their auto insurance simply by buying and installing winter tires. Winter tires ensure greater comfort and protection due to better traction. I encourage all drivers to contact their insurance companies for more details on how to keep themselves, and their families, safer on the roads this winter.”
— Reza Moridi, M.P.P., Richmond Hill

“I am pleased to see our government is committed to making it easier for drivers to stay safe in Newmarket-Aurora by offering a winter tire discount. Safety is of the utmost importance. Winters in Ontario can be fierce, and this is a great way to protect ourselves and our families and lower our insurance premiums. I urge everyone to take advantage of this initiative. Put yourself and your family first, call your insurance company and see how you can benefit by installing winter tires this upcoming season.”
— Chris Ballard, M.P.P., Newmarket-Aurora
“I know the Winter Maintenance Took Kit that the Ministry of Transportation is rolling out will help drivers in York Region and the rest of Ontario to drive safely this winter. I encourage all drivers to download the new Ontario 511 app so that they can find out information on road conditions based on forecasted weather, precipitation, wind and temperature.”
— Dr. Helena Jaczek, M.P.P., Oak Ridges-Markham
“With some areas of the province already experiencing snow, we are reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert and in control this winter driving season. Ontario has some of the safest roads in North America and our government is committed to upholding the highest winter maintenance standards. I encourage everyone to do their part to ensure each and every one of us get home safely to our families this winter.”
— Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation
