New Buses Enter Service in York Region

Making it Easier for Commuters to Get Around with More Travel Options

RICHMOND HILL — York Region MPPs Michael Chan, Steven Del Duca, Dr. Helena Jaczek, Reza Moridi and Chris Ballard are pleased to announce that Ontario is improving transit for commuters, making it easier and faster for them to reach their destination as Metrolinx’s Transit Procurement Initiative (TPI) delivers the 1000th bus purchased through its joint procurement bus supply contracts.

This partnership with participating transit agencies from across the province reduces costs
to municipalities by helping them stretch their funding, including Provincial Gas Tax funding, to deliver more transit services to riders. More new, accessible buses in more municipalities make taking public transit more convenient and reliable. Under the innovative Transit Procurement Initiative, York Region has benefited with 234 new buses that serve commuters in our area. More new, accessible buses make taking public transit more convenient.

  • Municipalities participating in TPI are: Barrie, Belleville, Burlington, Cobourg, Collingwood, Cornwall, Durham Region, Elliott Lake, Hamilton, Kenora, Kingston, London, Milton, North Bay, Oakville, Orillia, Quinte West, Sarnia, St. Catharines, St. Thomas, Thunder Bay (including HAGI Transit), Welland, Windsor (including Windsor Handi Transit), and York Region.
  • Bus types include:  Eight-metre low and high floor specialized buses, nine-metre transit buses, 12- and 18-metre conventional transit buses.
  • TPI is a Metrolinx program that helps small and medium-sized Ontario municipalities save money by reducing unit costs through higher volume purchases and performance-based specifications, and avoiding duplicate costs while improving product quality.
  • Overall, savings to Ontario taxpayers under TPI amount to an estimated $16 million in purchasing and administrative costs as of March 31, 2016.
