New Transit Facility Open for Service in York Region

York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva in Richmond Hill

On July 21, 2015, I had the great pleasure of attending the official opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new transit operations, maintenance and storage facility for York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva in Richmond Hill, alongside Richmond Hill MP Costas Menegakis, York—Simcoe MP Peter Van Loan, Wayne Emmerson, York Region Chairman and CEO, Frank Scarpitti, Mayor of Markham and Chairman of the York Region Rapid Transit Board; and Vito Spatafora, Richmond Hill Deputy Mayor.

This state-of-the-art facility was designed to meet LEED Silver standards with environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient features. The 481,679 square foot facility will hold 196 Viva buses and, among other environmental features, includes a reflective white roof to save on cooling costs and storage for 500,000 litres of rainwater recycled for use in the bus wash.

The total project cost was approximately $135 million, which was funded by the Government of Ontario, the Government of Canada and York Region.
